Mediterranean-Inspired Beef + Lamb

Who loves Mediterranean food?! It sure is a favorite of my husband and I. We love the added flavor that is added to many Mediterranean and Middle Eastern meats used in wraps and salads. Not, to mention, eating Mediterranean food allows you the opportunity to add one of the most healthy fats around–extra virgin olive oil!

(Note: I recommend doing research on finding a good quality extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). In the book Real Food / Fake Food–Why You Don’t Know What You’re Eating and What You Can Do About It, by Larry Olmsted, the author shares appalling insight into a handful of foods we eat in America that are anything but real, and EVOO is one of them. But here’s one bit of advice, if you can find EVOO that is cold pressed and bottled at the same location as its growing source, you’ve found yourself a good one. (Bariani is the brand I use.)

And this is likely a no brainer, when ordering out you can often easily  replace the typical basmati rice side with another side of salad, as well as maybe share some of those pita bread slices with your dinner mate. (I do occasionally cheat on keto, with a serving of gluten every now and then. But, it isn’t often. My reading tells me gluten should be avoided by most, and our own clinical nutritionist warns gluten may weaken an already depressed immune system, especially if there’s any chance one does have any gluten sensitivity.)

In any case, if you’re looking for a new way to add some flavor to your beef patty, try using my recipe for this Mediterranean-inspired beef. And, if you enjoyed how it turned out, would you mind doing me a quick favor by either sharing a comment below or snapping a shot of your dinner and tagging “@ketoliciouseats” in your Instagram or Facebook page? I’d so appreciate that!!

Add some flavor to your meat patties with this Mediterranean kofta-inspired recipe.

Macros for each patty: 384 calories | 2g net carbs | 22.3g protein | 31.2g fat

Ingredients

  • 1 pound organic pasture-raised ground beef

  • 1 pound pasture-raised ground lamb

  • 1 small onion, chopped

  • 1 cup (or one small package) fresh organic mint, chopped

  • 1/2 cup organic mushrooms, sliced (to add more veggies, optional)

  • 1-1/2 tablespoons dry organic parsley flakes or 1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped

  • 2 organic pasture-raised eggs

  • 1-1/2 teaspoons fresh organic minced garlic or 1/4 teaspoon organic garlic powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon organic ground or fresh printed black pepper

  • 1/2 teaspoon Himalayan pink salt (with iodide, optional)

  • 1/4 cup Bariani California Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Directions

  • Let the packaged organic pasture-raised meats sit out on the counter for about 20 minutes so the meat isn’t so cold on the hands when mixing in the next step.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, combine the spices, herbs, eggs and ground meats. Then, use your hands to mix the ingredients together.
  • Turn on your cast-iron skillet (or you can use a barbecue) to medium heat.
  • Divide the meat into six portions to make six patties.
  • When the grill is hot, cook the meat about two to three minutes on each side. Then serve by drizzling about 1 tablespoon of organic extra virgin olive oil on each patty, with veggie sides and/or a Mediterranean salad, and enjoy!

Notes

  • I recommend using clean organic ingredients whenever possible.
  • It isn’t uncommon for Mediterranean food to use lamb or a combination of beef and lamb in a kofta or gyro-style wrap. Feel free to sub out the grass-fed ground beef completely or in part if you’d prefer to use lamb in this recipe. I just use ground beef because it’s a stock item in our home.
